Peter Birnbaum has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Attorneys' Title Guaranty Fund, Inc. (ATG) since 1991. He currently oversees a staff of 165 people and annual revenues in excess of $30 million.

To provide resources to nearly 4,000 member attorneys assisting their clients in real estate transactions, Birnbaum develops and executes ATG's long-term strategies with the board of directors; identifies and implements new product lines; provides leadership on operations, customer relations management, and promotions; participates actively with industry and community partners to raise awareness of title industry and real estate legality concerns, emphasizing reform on relevant issues at the state and federal level; and works closely with staff to coordinate calls to action and communication around priority bills and other legislative issues.

With more than 25 years of experience in the real estate industry, Birnbaum continually serves as an educational resource to real estate professionals and numerous bar associations across the country. He has written many papers and is a frequent speaker.

Birnbaum has been featured in dozens of regional and national newspapers and trade publications, including: The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune (20+ articles), the Chicago Sun-Times (10+ articles), the Daily Herald, Chicago Daily Defender, Chicago Lawyer, and many other real estate and legal trade publications. He has also been interviewed on several Chicago TV stations, including: Chicago Cable and the Chicago affiliates of Fox News, NBC and WGN. He has testified in the U.S. Congress, the Illinois Senate and the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee.

Birnbaum was recently elected to the ALTA Board of Governors, only the second bar-related title company executive to serve during ALTA's 85-year history. A past president of the Alumni Board and current Board of Overseers member of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Birnbaum was honored with a Distinguished Service Award from the College in 2004. He has been a member of the Illinois Bar's Task Force on Public Protection from Unauthorized Practice since 1996 and is Vice Chair of the Chicago Bar Association Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law.

In January 2004, Birnbaum was appointed to a six-year term as a judge on the seven-member Illinois Claims Court. He hears cases en banc and rules on formal monetary claims.

The Illinois Bar presented him with a Board of Governors Award in 2001 for "Outstanding Service to the Profession and the Public." And, in 2005, he received the Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Lend A Hand Foundation "Making a Difference" award. Birnbaum has also held positions on various corporate and philanthropic boards. He served as president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago and now is on the board of directors. Birnbaum is also on the Board of Directors of the Jesse White Tumblers.

Birnbaum began his career at ATG as a law clerk in 1981, while a first-year student at the Chicago Kent College of Law (where he graduated from in 1983). He advanced to positions of staff attorney, and vice president and counsel. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1979. Birnbaum lives in Chicago with his wife and their three children.
