The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois has issued an announcement, entitled Important Announcement About Telephone Scam, notifying attorneys that their clients may be the target of a telephone scam. The scheme involves identifying an attorney's law clients through a review of public court documents and then using caller ID spoofing to initiate a call to the client that appears to be originating from the attorney's law office. The caller tells the client that he or she owes money to the law office and directs how to make payment.
