ATG celebrated its 40th anniversary at several events during 2004 and through several publications and advertisements. In addition, ATG street banners were on display during July and August.
As part of the ongoing 40th anniversary celebration, ATG paid tribute to founder Stanley B. Balbach of Urbana by commissioning a bronze bust in his honor. The bust was created by artist Robert Walker (St. Charles, Missouri), who unveiled his stunning work at a dinner in Stan's honor in October in Champaign. Stan spearheaded early efforts to preserve the lawyer's role in real estate transactions by promoting "the Fund Concept" across the state and finally incorporating Attorneys' Title Guaranty Fund, Inc. in August 1964. He remained active with ATG until his recent retirement. The publication, "ATG: 40 Years as the Lawyer's Resource" contains the history of ATG, including Stan's efforts. Also at the October dinner, ATG honored other influential figures whose early and continued efforts contributed to ATG's success in many ways: Ward McDonald, ATG's first corporate president; Richard Hart and John Satter, remaining founding board members; James Elson, long-term board member and creator of many ATG advertisements and logos from the early days.
As another lasting remembrance of the anniversary milestone, ATG donated a total of $40,000 among four organizations that serve the legal community. "We have enjoyed celebrating our anniversary by honoring Stan and other directors, hosting events, and appearing in publications and ads, but we also wanted to demonstrate our gratitude to the legal community. The years of support from so many individuals and groups have contributed to our growth and success," said Peter J. Birnbaum, ATG president and CEO. "The recipients are organizations whose missions are aligned with ours." The four organizations are listed at right.
College of Law, University of Illinois (U of I) - Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. The U of I College of Law consistently ranks among the top law schools in the country and among the top ten public law schools. Its mission is to train well-rounded, critical, and socially-conscious individuals to become outstanding lawyers. Many of the ATG legal staff and board of directors are University of Illinois College of Law graduates, as are hundreds of ATG member-shareholders.
Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association (IRELA) - Arlington Heights, Illinois. The 1,200-member organization aims to help the public better understand the complexities of buying a home as well as to provide education to real estate lawyers. IRELA members are experienced attorneys dedicated to providing assistance in connection with real estate transactions of all types.
Harold I. Levine Center for Housing - Chicago, Illinois. The center is named in memory of Harold I. Levine, a litigator and real estate lawyer who died in May 2003. During Harold's career, he was honored by many prestigious groups for his many contributions to the profession and the community. Harold Levine was a long-time ATG member and ardent supporter who brought enthusiasm and insight into the practice of real estate law.
Wisconsin Law Alumni Association, University of Wisconsin Law School - Madison, Wisconsin. Among its projects, the Association conducts continuing legal education programs and has instituted an annual awards program to honor alumni and faculty. Some 17,000 students have graduated from the Law School since its inception in 1935.
ATG has grown dramatically in recent years. Our sincere thanks to ATG members and support staff whose efforts have made possible this success.
