IN MEMORIAM:

Richard L. Thies
Longtime Colleague, Founding Member, and Friend
November 7, 1931 – April 10, 2021

Richard L. Thies photoThe legal profession lost a great leader in Richard L. Thies of Urbana, earlier this month. In a note to ATG friends and colleagues ATG President Peter Birnbaum said, "With sadness I learned today of the passing of Urbana attorney Richard L. Thies, an early law partner of our founder, Stanley B. Balbach, and longtime ATG supporter. So long, in fact, his signature appears on our 1964 articles of incorporation. It is fair to say that but for Dick's efforts, ATG may never have succeeded. Not only did he lend support to Stanley, he also skillfully earned the support of the ISBA at a time when we needed it most."

Dick made an indelible impact on the profession and the public. Among his many accomplishments, he was a past president of the ISBA and a co-founder of ISBA Mutual, along with ATG co-founder Richard O. Hart. Dick's sons and grandson are accomplished trial lawyers, carrying on their father's fine tradition. Our deepest sympathy to the Thies family.
