Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Set to Expire

Short Sale Transactions May Result in Higher Income Taxes Starting in 2013

The Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 (Act), enacted December 20, 2007, is set to expire December 31, 2012. Without the  Relief Act, homeowners would typically be responsible for any deficiency not pursued by a lender in a foreclosure action, for any loan amount forgiven by a lender in connection with a short sale transaction, or for the amount of a principal reduction.
